Loudoun County Drivers seem to have a lot of those coil cuffs. That would make chaining up these things a whole lot easier, and one of their drivers is offering to sell some used ones for $20. I have looked for these things online and they are around $100 for a new pair.
These are supplied by the company mostly right? But not my company. This just feels kind of like buying discounted diesel from an unscrupulous and pissed off company driver.
Do you think this would be unethical?

If they are that company's property, then you would be buying stolen property. Definitely unethical.
-
If the company is selling the equipment you're probably okay.
If a driver is selling the equipment, tell him you'll send the money to the company. If he refuses, you're buying hot stuff.
Question...I don't know anything about hauling coils but why would a company be selling perfectly good rigging?buddyd157, x1Heavy, Midwest Trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
It aint illegal til ya get caught
tommymonza Thanks this. -
True. But if you're the one getting ripped off it might be a different story.Deere hunter, tommymonza, x1Heavy and 2 others Thank this.

Used as in the company said replace with new and toss the old ones in trash.
Then I would buy them.
If he is selling what amounts to company property then watch out.
Once you are labeled a thief, false or not, it's hard to shake off.Deere hunter, PE_T and cke Thank this. -
Buying stolen property is total bs and you know it!
PE_T Thanks this. -
The more I think about it the more I know it's stealing. I can't see any reason why an owner operator or lease operator that owns his own equipment would be selling the stuff if he's still an active driver.

Everything on my rig is precious in coil hauling days. I don't sell a #### thing. Its not mine to sell. If someone wants this or that or something or other they can go to the Company HQ yard and pick out the mountain storage in the back their own self.
Its driver trying to get a dollar off the company by selling items. Don't do it. Its hot stuff. In a way its a higher crime than most anything else including a bit of murder. If a driver is caught "Selling" or claiming to lost this or that to his company that he ripped off.
I do not compromise when it comes to coil. I know that in many ways I am fast and loose if not total outlaw and so forth yadda. But in coil? No. I turn nazi and account for (Inventorying) everything on that truck and trailer down to the last bolt.
The one type of hauling I am grateful not to have to do anymore is with MBM Darden Annapolis into Jersey and Connecticut. Thats like a den of thieves who will snatch a 90 pound case of exotic seafood and run off.
They find in their greed that they cannot run with it very fast to their vehicle. I catch em half way, apply the tire thumper for a few knots. Down go the box. They stumble off with pain and ow out of the fight before they knew what hit them.
If I lost that 500 dollars they take it out of my pay. Or charge me as accessory. No thanks. So knot school has saved me a few times. -
There is a difference between coil cuffs...and plastic rings that shippers put in coils. I am going to assume that he is selling you the plastic ring and not the coil cuff, because even used cuffs will go for $75 easy
