Hey guys thanks for all of ur help. Now i know what preamp is for. Just to clarify things. The amp itself doesnt have the high low switch. The radio. i had it installed on the radio. on low it does around 12watts and on high around 40 by itself. All the amp has is the ssb/am switch and the preamp switch. Also from what i am understanding i should just run the radio on AM. Thanks for help. Have a great rest of the weekend.

That's the truth i have a cb hardley ever use it but i do use it from time to time. Hey do you run APRS and if you run HF try us on 14.302.5 trying to get the band back going before i went over to Iraq we had 20 or 30 truck drivers there and allways had a good time chatting as we rolled across country.

I run some PSK-31 on 20 meters but right now time is the problem ...
If your on 20 on sunday mornings lissen for me on 14.300 -
Does having your preamp off effect the power output of the amp itself? I’ve got a TX-100 amp running into a Cobra 25 LTD Classic that’s been peaked and tuned. The amp has three switches. Amp, Pre, And SSB.

What exactly does the preamp do?
-
It amplifies incoming signals but ... there is a problem with a bunch of them that were sold, they have noisy transistors/fets and poor design that allows higher gain than is needed which causes more issues.
-
They just amplify the incoming receive. Noise/static and everything else.
You hear a distant weak signal and decide to turn on the preamp, bit they are still hard to hear because the noise/static is also louder. It's still the same situation in the end.
Sometimes at night, after the sun goes down, they can be useful. But IMO it's a rare occasion.
I would still prefer something with a preamp, but wouldn't go looking for it... Not much to miss without one.weasel Thanks this.
