Oh yeah, lots of business happens in a trailer hood no matter what the zoning board says about it.

I'm a company driver. Sometimes I think I'd like to be an owner operator but it doesn't last long. It's a fairly interesting thread.

I''m calling total BS on the taxes. If you look at the actual tax burden per household/wage earner, California isn't even in the top 10. IIRC that honor belongs to Illinois. Californians also benefit from Prop. 13, especially if you bought your property 20 years ago like I did.

California is the undisputed world leader in stupid regulations, I won't question that for a second.

But.....you can make the argument that we need the regulations to protect the place from the hordes of people who want to move here from all over the world. It's paradise and everybody wants a piece of it.

Too many people per square footage for me. That place is supposed collapse and vanish under the ocean too. I don't fancy California too much.

To be quite honest, I'd choose Bismarck, ND over it, hands down, any time, day and night.
    Different strokes for different folks.

They are they same idiots that voted to keep Chik-Fil-A out of the airport because they support only traditional man-woman marriage.

All I can say regarding all the tyrannical insanity going on right now is the lawyers, the Appellate courts and ultimately the SCOTUS are going to be real busy for quite awhile. Better give RBG a double dose of Geritol & Red Bull.

What a playbook, how to destroy the United States without firing a shot, brilliant...

There's a lot of juice coming off those high tension lines. If you ever wanna see just how much, take a 4' fluorescent light tube and on a dark night hold it vertically directly under those lines. It will light, not overly bright, but it will light. Ask me how I know...

You can call BS until the cows come home, but that doesn't change the facts. There is much more to the cost of living out here than just property taxes. We have the highest income and fuel tax rate in the nation. That's on top of the cost of real estate (been a home owner here for 38 years, commercial and residential), the highest insurance rates for every type, some of the highest utility rates, the list goes on and on. I'm glad you don't feel it's too expensive here, but from where I sit and have been sitting for over 40 years, this state is getting more expensive and less appealing. Oh and by the way, this paradise is now in the top ten states with the most people leaving much to the dismay of the states where we're moving to.

States with the Highest and Lowest Taxes - TurboTax Tax Tips & Videos

10 states with the highest personal income tax rates
A comparison of 2019 tax rates compiled by the Federation of Tax Administrators ranks California as the top taxer with a 12.3% rate, unless you make more than $1 million and have to pay 13.3%.

The top 10 highest income tax states for 2019 are:

    • California 13.3%
    • Hawaii 11%
    • Oregon 9.9%
    • Minnesota 9.85%
    • Iowa 8.98%
    • New Jersey 8.97%
    • Vermont 8.95%
    • District of Columbia 8.95%
    • New York 8.82%
    • Wisconsin 7.65%
    Property taxes
Property tax falls under local, not state, jurisdiction. The most expensive property tax counties in terms of percent of income, according to the Tax Foundation's analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau's 2009 American Community Survey were:

    • Passaic County, New Jersey 8.79%
    • Essex County, New Jersey 8.27%
    • Union County, New Jersey 8.13%

The Tax Foundation interprets individual tax burden by what taxpayers actually spend in local and state taxes, rather than report these expenses from the state revenue perspective used by the Census Bureau. Its State and Local Tax Burden Rankings study reported that Americans paid an average rate of 9.9% in state and local taxes in 2012. According to the foundation, the five highest state-local tax states were:

    • New York 12.7 %
    • Connecticut 12.6%
    • New Jersey 12.2%
    • Illinois 11.0%
    • California and Wisconsin 11.0%
