Notice after making contact with the car how his truck remains at the same speed as the rest of traffic. I think this trucker was a jerk, this video surely looks bad on them.

70 mph... He was doing the Speed limit. Long blast of horn was to notify surrounding traffic that there was a problem, and that he needed space. And as far as not slowing down quick enough... You have no idea what he is hauling. Maybe he has a load of steel pipe that could go through the cab if he stomps on the brakes. Or maybe he has a half full smoothbore tanker. Not to mention that by slowing down nice and gentle he keeps the car from careening off into some other obstical or traffic. He got everyone involves to the ABOSOLUTE SAFEST PLACE. He made other motorists award that there was a huge problem so they would give him space, AND he got the car and himself clear of the lanes of travel. Presumably without killing anyone.

IMO that driver handled the situation very well after the initial contact... Before contact he could have taken action to avoid it all together. Why he didn't could be attributed to many things.

This apparently happened in New Jersey.... known for aggressive 4-wheelers.

No this trucker did not handle this well at all. Any decent trucker paying attention and sees a car moving up on the right knows what is about to happen and should be prepared. Not in this case, hit car, maintains speed, holds horn excessively long, too many indicators this trucker was not driving his truck, his emotions were.

You are the professional driver, you make it easier for others on the road no matter what.

    tommymonza and disoba Thank this.

Before initial contact he could have, and should have, done things different, I agree in that aspect.

But I guarantee you if I'm in the hammer lane with a car attached to my front bumper while beside other traffic I will be on that horn as long as it takes to make sure EVERYONE within earshot knows I need space and to stay clear.

I would like to think that I could remain in control of my CMV, as well as that driver did, if I were to find a car across my bumper... Reguardless of how it got there or who was at fault.

So I partially agree with you; otherwise, I respectfully agree to disagree.

They will blame the trucker for this.

For the simple reason, raining and not enough following distance between him and the pickup in front of him.

it seems as though he’s coming in hot and closing in on that pickup.

Either way nice handling of situation but he knows he’s screwed and the lawyers are going to try and pin everything on him.

Yeah, after looking at it full screen, trucker is clearly screwed, and retracting my statement, better not let the vultures get a hold of the video. Trucker was going too fast, in the rain, tailgating, the car had their signal on, and how the car missed the back of the garbage truck is a miracle in itself. I think, AFTER the fact, the driver handled it well, he could have mashed the brakes, the car would have gone spinning out of sight, and he could have kept going. Nobody in this day and age going to say anything, and the people in the car,,,"ALL WE KNOW IS, IT WAS A RED TRUCK",,

    Yep.
Every peterbilt I've seen loves speeding and tailgating. They think they own the hammer lane.

Dash cams are so helpful in many ways, to the company and driver or to everyone around them, but they’re still only a small part of the whole story.

That’s what the investigator’s job is to do.

Piece together the whole puzzle before any blame is laid.
