Main cap fretting was the big issue. The later blocks were supposed to be less prone to fret.
I don’t doubt that the tune people use and also driving style has a lot to do with it.

The problem with using the px injector is if it fails within the warranty period Cummins will replace it with a rx. Not right but thats what they do. We use rx now unless the customer doesn't mind the risk.

I have one of the latest built 500hp n14, made in 10/02, still had the fretting. Granted I only opened it at 1.2 mil to check, but it already was too late .
Another 435hp truck was opened at 1.6 mil and everything was still perfect.
From my research it looks like only 500hp and 525hp had the fretting problem, 460hp and down did not

I personally think regular Rotella is the best. You should only do synthetic after the rebuild, because seals will start leaking if you switch now

For injectors you can call Premco, they were $250 a piece when I bought mine 2 years 200k miles ago

Red Top was just a cosmetic enhancement to the higher horsepower engines before, which started at 460 horsepower and went up to 525. Cast rocker covers instead of stamped and painted red. I drove a 93 HO n14, and that one probably ran better than the later Red Tops, which were really popular hereabouts.

The regular ones topped out at 435 horsepower, and were often dual power rated with the highest rating on cruise.

I worked for a company which never had Red Tops, the head mechanic didn't believe in them, but they all can break down. Injector sleeves cracking was a big problem, where fuel would get into the coolant. They made a special tool to remove them to be replaced in the year 2005, iirc.

I had one leak fuel all over the top of the engine. Difficult to repair. Not my favorite engine by any means.

    Coffey Thanks this.
