Hello all. I'm a local driver. I just purchased some new used tires and was wondering if I need to have them regrooved. I was told from day one that DOT checks the center of the tire tread 20200518_120637.jpg . I highlighted the areas in the picture.

You can regroove if you want to. It will help give a little more servicable traction. Dot is only gonna gauge the circumference grooves and not the tread block sipe grooves that you highlighted. The tread blocks are designed to change patterns as they wear but the circumference grooves stay consistant to the wear out indicators. Looks like they are pretty close to the rock guard ridges in the grooves. Once they hit that they become trailer tires or retread candidates. Looks like tread wear is nice and even. They may give you some good miles.

The green is the only grooves you need to worry about as far as Dot is concerned.

Sorry slightly mistaken all 5 main grooves around circumference must be in dot compliance just what I read of rules :)

The way I always took the regs, that tread has to be below 2/32 on 2 adjacent main groves. To be bad.

Yes. They will measure them. But they will not put a drive or trailer tire Oos if the inner two have legal tread because they allow for uneven wear that is expected to happen.
They will oos if the outer edge to the outer groove is showing 0/32 or secondary rubber or steel cord ply.
That is tire industry standard. They measure depth for mileage on one outer only and the 2 centers and average the depth for the estimated remainder of service life or for adjustment credit purposes on defects.

Without even gauging those tires, I'd bet they'll pass. They still have some meat on them.

What is the price of buying used tires and having them regrooved?

The reason why they dont worry about the outer grooves on most drives is because of the rock ridges in them. Tread can wear down to them and make the groove look less than 2/32’s when the tire is still actually 6
