My wife got me an awesome orbital polisher for my birthday and I spent last weekend polishing the truck. Maybe this was a big mistake. Coming west on I-10 yesterday I suffered severe retinal burns in both eyes and today I'm getting around, barely, with a walking stick and a Visiting Angels lady who has the voice of a, well...an angel.

I've never seen a hood blacked out but I'm wondering if that might be the way to go. I thought about getting a quote on a hood wrap...but I don't want to hear ya'll calling me a girly man. I'm very sensitive that way. Is it done? If not, why not?

Yes. Very common years ago for trucks to have top part of hoods painted a matte black or dark flat green from factory to combat that killer glare. Wiley Saunders is one co. that comes to mind that still does it. White truck flat black hood.
I’ve thought about this myself as to flatten the clear coat on the top of hood next time I repaint. Well still see good color just not have the blinding mirror shine.

Another thing on that note. Been told that white painted cab roofs helped them stay cooler in the summer months. That is why back then you’d see a lot of trucks that would be any solid color or striped up nice but they’d have a black hood top and a white cab top. Looked odd sometimes and worked out real nice with some paint schemes.

Just an FYI, flattened clear coats and flattened single stage paints don't have long term UV holdout.

Flattened coatings are also noticeably weaker than their glossy counterparts which makes them a potential disaster for someone who doesn't know how to safely wash them.

They're fine for the stripes on the hood of your classic car, but far from ideal for a daily driver.

I know on 4 wheelers people also put tint on the lower windshield to block it.

On the roof. What about some solar panels to charge the APU batteries?

The verdict is still out on tinting the bottom of the windshields on big trucks in Texas. Started to see it in early 2000’s and It became more popular here around 10 years ago. Some guys have no problems with Dot and others can’t win with it. Imo. I think it looks tacky and some guys use that chrome looking stuff that just causes more glare to other drivers. But that being said if it works and keeps you from being blinded and you can make it look tasteful than what can it hurt.
As for solar panels on trucks. Lets wait till california tests that out first before we invest in that can of worms.

Didn’t think about that. But I live in the land of the easy bake oven. Clear coat will peel and imron on trucks turns to flat chalky paint also in 10 or so years. So we are used to having to keep stuff out of the sun or live with flat paint here. Lol

    A couple thoughts

If you want to try something ... use this ...

    Peel Coat® Product Page

Also trucks that are chalky are acid washed too much without any care until it was too late, these are usually single stage epoxy paint according to Mack and freightliner.
