One thing the ELD does good is; Going On Duty Driving all on it's own.
If you get inspected. DOT asks why no inspections? Say the ELD does everything automatic. It's supposed to enter the inspection when I start driving!
DOT says no.
You say: It does a great job of logging on duty driving with the truck parked and engine off. You gonna give me a violation on that too?
DOT: Just go. Let the FMCSA worry about you.

 

I use 60mph as a time basis. Except anywhere north east. I then calculate at 30mph and then add one hour. Works 99/100 times.

Got 600 miles? I know I can make that in ten hours, but usually quicker than that. I pick three places to shut down, one closer, one at target and one a little farther away. Always under estimate how far you can go. Get to that place, then decide if you can press farther as your time runs down. Never plan to drive 11 hours. Only plan for 10, you’ll be out of hours till the 8th day and typically run out of hours on the 6th or 7th.

Every once in a while you get stuck as some schlep shipper or receiver that takes over 4 hours to load or unload and that’s a real plan kicker. The. You pull out the big guns and can then decide if you want to shift your clock back 8 hours using a split. Shutting down and taking a 10 and leave super early. I’ve never had a late load.
