Must wipe dipstick when checking oil?

I asked a company mechanic about this once. What I was told was the dipstick marks are set to read with the dipstick all the way down as far as it will go (WITHOUT) twisting. You don't insert it fully to check the oil.

 

I'd ask a dealership. I've learned the hard way not to trust many company 'mechanics'

 

Or the owners manual if the truck still has it.

 

My 1951 Jaguar XK120 roadster had a float in the sump and a gauge on the dash. I pressed a button on the dash before cranking the engine to read the gauge.

 

I doubt in this case the information from a dealership will be any better. The best source is to just ask the engine maker! The carrier shops, as well as the dealerships, are all basically using the same material published by the Engine OEMs.

 

Back in the 30’s-50’s on the first model H’s and into the NH’s Cummins offered a site glass in the sump pan to visually check oil level. Made with real brass and glass. Only one I’ve seen was on a Nh-180 in a ‘52 or ‘53 Sterling-White at a truck show.
Not sure but I guess they wern’t to popular due to possible breakage. I have seen some older engines that have a retro fit dipstick in the hole in the pan were the site glass was instead of the usual block mounted plate above the pan.

 

Thats the way my dad’s Audi is. No stick to check. Just a readout on the dash.
