Tanker axle group over weight?

    I got a ? If you are under your gross weight can you be cited for being over on an axle group?
    smooth bore tanker loaded with salt water.

    Yes, of course. Multiple offenses can even lead to jail time and loss of a CDL.

    Sure you can be cited. But most of the scales don't want to wait long enough for the load to settle down so they can weigh it. Most of them.

    Seems to me there would be too many variables. As if the scale could only weigh one set at a time what if scales were lower than the road and what if they didn't wait for the load to settle all the way. It's dang near impossible to axle out a load while loading with or without loading scales most of them just go by gross.

    Yeah, plants that load you on a scale all just have a platform scale. Their intention is to keep you under gross. There are a lot of variables. Tire sizes on both the tractor and trailers, fifth wheel height and type of trailers to name a few. I have heard of the DOT giving tanker drivers a hard time on axles but I have never had a problem with it. As long as I'm under gross anyway.

    The scalemaster at the POE in echo, Utah will hold you until it settles, even if its backs trucks all the way to the I80. Horrible guy.

    If you usually pull the same trailer, then adjust your 5th wheel until you find the hole that gets you as close to perfect as possible. It's there, you just have to find it. Do this with full fuel tanks.

    When you pull on the scale, don't set your brakes and take your foot off the brake pedal, and just let the truck roll back and forth. The surging will settle out a lot faster to get your true weights.

    Doesn't matter what the product is with a single tank (smooth bore or otherwise). If it is liquid, the percentages of weight on the axle groups should stay the same. As mentioned above, if you have the fifth wheel set in the same place the last time you hauled this trailer, and you were good, you will be good now.
    If you have never hauled this trailer before, 13 bucks is cheap insurance to make sure you are good.

    unless it is the trailer axle group that is over.....then changing the fifth wheel position will not fix the problem.

    Have never run into a tank with sliding tandems. All the tanks I have hauled, the only way the trailer group is over is if you are overweight overall.
