I have some hearing loss making it difficult to hear sometimes with a noisy background and find it difficult at times to understand what is said on the cb.

I bought a Wilson 5” external speaker and that helps some. Other than controlling noise in the truck, do you guys have any tips? I am just using a Uniden pro505xl.

    Thanks

Turn off other distractions such as the XM or book on tape.

    Turn up the volume.

Mount the external speaker up above the drivers door, pointing down towards you.. focusing sound waves directly at you instead of dispersing into the cab.

I have the noise cancelling speaker too. It helps a lot. I got mine from DXEngineering.

I wouldn't use headphones. If someone with a so called loud and proud radio starts talking, they may damage your hearing. It's bad enough with the external speaker mounted behind my head. Many times I've had to quickly reach up and turn the volume down when someone would start blasting in, but I wasn't quick enough, and it makes my ears hurt a little.

Younger guys, start wearing ear plugs in the cab while driving because this is where you will end up. The cab noise level is not safe long term. Engine under load with engine cooling fan screaming is 100db in my truck. Add in radios turned up so you can hear them above that noise and the hearing damage is inevitable.

Peterbilt? Fans in the Freightliner and Internationals was never an issue. I do have ringing in one ear and that was from talking skip all day and night and the white noise was high in frequency.
