a little backround on me, im 20 years old, class A CDL...currently working at UPS Freight part time making $10.50 an hour, only getting 20-30 hours a week, which isnt much now but when i become a driver the money will be good

freight is very slow and im going broke so i started filling out applications and got a interview with OD

they are literally across the street from us, our yards basically face each other

i dont want to leave my job now and would like to stay on so whenever they do need a driver i can make the big bucks:biggrin_255: but i have to get another job and wonder how both companies would respond to this conflict of interest

any opinions or thoughts on Old Dominion or my situation in general? ill probably start on the dock but i heard they start between $14-15 an hour

How in the world can they be hiring? I have been laid off from OD since Feb. If thats how it is they need to call me back first.

Stay at UPS as long as you can. $10.50 and hour is not a lot of money but look at the possibilty once you become a driver. You stand to gain by being a driver with UPS. The other option your taking a big chance. A chance you really don't know about. On your part, cut whatever costs, e.g. private expenses you can. Hold on as long as you can. The trucking industry is a gamble at best right now. A big gamble that might not profitable to you and your family. Look for other alternatives close to home that can help you out. 30 hours a week is not alot of hours but you still can work a second job and probably make ends meet. then when you become a driver for UPS you can leave and start a life. In my opinion your ahead of the curve so to speak. If you go elsewhere that may not be the case.

I would stay with UPS, they are probably in the best position to offer you future opportunities.

If the supervisors for both companies don't have a problem with you working at the other one than see if you can make it fit scheduling wise.

Chances are that at some point there will be some sort of scheduling conflict & you will have to make a choice on which one you will tell no.

Just a little info for you. ODFL P&D drivers normally start out at about 17-18.50 an hour, depending on experience. You have to sever your relationship with UPS. OD does not allow that.
