Hi everyone!! I’m new on here and need some good straight up advice so enjoy my novel.
I have been driving over 10 years and 2 years ago I got my own truck. I’m proud to be the first female o/o in my company’s 50+ year history. I LOVE what I do and I’m learning a lot as an o/o.
I have a 2016 FL Cascadia DD15 almost paid off. It has 486k miles with an extended FL warranty on it and it’s good til April 2021/550k miles. It’s a really nice well maintained truck. It has disc breaks, a/c cooled/heated drivers seat and so on. I’m also the second owner.
So far this year I’ve replaced the a/c compressor, new high end shocks, new power steering pump, new belt tensioner, had the O-Rings and oil pan gasket replaced and just replaced the DPF.
I have had repeated issues with the DOC sensor and FL has always taken care of me.
But the minute I go back out and drive 1000 miles or less my Ck engine light comes on but there’s no codes when I Ck my engine diagnostic.
I was told to keep my rpms to 1550-1650 when driving to keep the DOC from getting dirty with soot. I have done that and my Ck engine light sometimes goes off but mostly stays on with no codes. What’s that all about??
With that being said after my warranty is up and I pay it off (next year) should I keep the truck and maintain the after treatment system as necessary or will it drain me dry financially in repairs and downtime?
Sorry for the novel but this has been weighing my mind for awhile which is why I’m asking for real sound advice from my trucker brothers out there.
Thank you and everyone stay safe

If you can afford it trade it for a new one. When your warranty expires all costs come out of your pocket. The emissions garbage on these trucks will leave you with an empty bank account.

Here is a simple calculation for comparing three options - buying a new one, buying a used one, and repairing an existing one.
You can change the values in cells with italics.
It's not a complete cost calculation. Just to compare these three options - buy a new truck, buy used, or repair existing.
The after-treatment system is not so difficult. If you educate yourself a little and find a qualified mechanic who can properly fix it and maintain it in good condition - your truck can make you money at least 300-400 thousand miles more.

Buy new or used or repair

I know what Id do personally, but we're not allowed to discuss that on here.

Trading the truck off is trading the devil you know for the devil you don't. What is going to empty your bank account is not knowing how to work on your truck or know how all the systems work and relying on a dealer and that warranty to help you. They'll figure out any way they can to deny that warranty coverage and leave you paying out of pocket for the repair cost. Dealerships are NOT your friend when it comes to the single truck owner/operator. Do you trust them enough to dianose a faulty sensor that can lead to a derate that might only be a few hundred dollars to repair vs them telling you your doc and/or dpf filter are plugged and need to be replaced at the cost of thousands of dollars?

Does your truck have an apu? How often do you idle your truck? Long periods of idling are detrimental to the emissions systems.

Hi . I have two 2015 Cascadias in running condition .
Spent 25k cad on one around 1M miles (big expenses were ONE BOX assembly and DEF pump .
And now the another cascadia is giving same codes (comes and goes like yours )
    4364 fmi 18 .
I’d say if you want to live headache free ,learn stick shift , buy a glider or any o/o maintained pre emissions and keep truckin

I've always been a buy pay off and run for 3-5 years. Then use as part of a down payment to buy new or newer. But today's trucks it's easy to spend a years wort of payment in just 2 or 3 emissions repair. So I say if you can afford, once warranty or shortly thereafter. Trade in for a new truck. Keep your monthly payment as low as possible. So if you can put down 10-20k in addition to your trade. *if you save .10-.20 per mile in your maintance account on your new truck. You will more than have that amount come trade time.

Thanks I got the stick shift down 13 spd but you’re right it would be headache free if I got a glider.
I was surprised you got 1M miles on your 2015. I had heard you were lucky to get a little over 500k out of the engines with all the emissions bs. Seems you don’t mind keeping and maintaining your emissions trucks. I’ve heard nightmares about the EGR leaking, SCR messing up and of course the DOC but I think I understand what I need to do with that. Is there a maintenance schedule with our trucks emissions equipment? I’m going to sound ignorant but what is a box assembly and how much was that and how much is a def pump?
