I have seen many dipsticks with homemade marks for the hot running engines. In fact, my old Volvo had a factory mark and what looked like what a screwdriver would make being hit with a hammer!
Must wipe dipstick when checking oil?

That tiny amount of distance the stick goes down from twisting aint going to make a tinkers dam.... Probably like a pint to a quart of oil difference in the 2 readings.

I drive a Volvo VNL760. If my engine has not run in 4 hours or more, I can go to my dash control and bring up an oil measurement. I have checked this electronic reading with a physical reading and it is accurate. So, in the morning I just flip through a couple of menus on my dash controls and 'voila, I have an oil measurement without having to pull my dipstick (I still raise the hood and have a look around for any damage, frayed wires, belts, etc.).

Sometimes I’ll just check on the first pull when it’s been sitting all weekend, Sometimes I’ll wipe it if it’s after 10k on the service when I know it’s getting due for another, usually the only time it takes a gallon anyways. I’ll wipe if it’s run recently though.
I’m also not wiping it on my jeans and getting it all over my seats650cat425 Thanks this.
