Hi! I just discovered on the back of my Stryker 955's antenna jack that the male threads are about 1/8" shorter than the junk Cobra CB's I have laying around. The problem is when I screw the antenna onto the radio and tighten it tight as it will go, the connector bottoms out on the jack and won't screw on far enough to throughally tighten the cable and there is a lot of free play left in the cable.

There is no way that this is getting a good ground through the shieding all the way to the antenna.
What should I do to fix this?

I shouldn't have to saw 1/8 inch off every new PL259 coax connector that I buy in the future so that I get a good ground through my coax.
There's no telling how much issue this has caused.

And yes I know that a good ground is not getting through because I tested it with a continuity tester whille wiggling the coax connector. Ground goes in and out.

Ok why don't you just change the so-239 on the radio?

It seems to be easier than anything else.

    Cobras are junk?

Never mind I get it after reading it again, use one of them off the cobras you have laying around.

    Why?

A good solder on pl-259 will have the same shell length, cheap ones won't.

A crimp on pl-259 is acceptable too and that has a shorter shell but it seems most don't get that a quality crimp on is just as good as a soldered connector, sometimes it is superior because of the poor quality of the soldering skills.

I think these export radios are just cheaply put together.

Thanks I might try the SO239 swap out.

I have an elbo installed on the 955 now so my coax doesn't have to turn a 90 degree bend any longer going into the radio.
It shorted out once before there while trying to set SWR. I cut that section out and solder on a new Amphenol PL259 and the cable is good again.

I ground down enough metal off the face of that elbow so that I gets a could tight solid connection and the coax plugs into the elbow as it should.

Right now I have the best SWR I've ever seen on the radio. I have .2 on ch1, .2 on ch20 and 1.4 on ch40

I could keep sawing some off the antenna and get that 1.4 SWR reading down some on ch 40 but that should be good no?

Heres an easy way to remember the SWR antenna length thing.

SWR higher on 40 shorten the antenna.
SWR higher on 1 lengthen the antenna

The diff in a 1.2 vs 1.4 is nothing unless you got a boatload of power..

I see where you were coming from, the reasons I asked Why?

Sometimes it is just easier to deal with the coax but not knowing if he had to run it through the maze to get it out or not, and because this is really a radio issue, changing the 'so' out would be the best way to fix the issue.

I have tried a few different connectors even new Amphenol PL259's won't tighten up on this guy.
The face of the fitting bottoms out and won't let it tighten up quite enough to lock the inner part of the fitting down.

I did solder on new Amphenol PL259. Its a bit sketchy doing it in the truck but I made it happen just like ole Hard Drive from Fine Tune CB's. He actually would have replaced the coax though. It grounded out where it bends into the radio and I cut that out and fixed it.

Because most coax are junk at the truckstops and have that sloppiness built in. I bet if he gets the goldish mini 8 his problem is fixed. I got a couple jumpers to use at the house and grabbed the wrong ones. They sell black junk that is loose no matter what you do.
