    Hello truckers,

I realized PTO was on after driving for an hour. I only know I'm not supposed to do so.

Any opinion and advice will be appreciated.

What kind of PTO? If it's like a blower, probably nothing, but a hydraulic, like a dump truck, you could easily fry the pump. Don't you have a light on the dash saying the PTO is engaged? If not, I'd get one.

Car hauler with a hydraulic pump. I drove for more than an hour. It does have a light on the switch.

Is there anything I need to check?

Hydraulic pumps have a certain "working" range. Spinning them too fast usually takes a seal out. If it's not leaking, probably dodged a bullet. Pumps aren't that expensive, but NEXT TIME, WATCH IT!!!:angry5:

There is a safety device that you can have installed. Did that when I put pto on my truck. It won't let you release the brakes while the pto is engaged. I think its standard on all stingers if am not wrong. Its a simple device that locks the airlines

Used to work at a fertilizer company... Most of the trucks had wet kits on them to run the hydraulics. Saw many pumps get burned up because they were drove with pto engaged. Even saw one that had grenaded while going down the road... That one actually took out the transmission as well as it shot shrapnel into the gearbox from the pto itself.

I fried a pto pump last year from accidentally engaging it when putting seat belt on and snagged the pump lever.

Burned out in 5 minutes of driving while I was trying to figure out why the truck was feeling like the jakes were activated but not making noise. (No mufflers on this truck)

The hose was not hooked up to anything so the oil couldn’t flow. So it overheated and burned the pump.

Now I always have my hose hooked to the return line in case the pump ever gets turned on again but the oil just flows to the tank.

It's really easy to wire a warning light into the PTO system. A big red light on the dash, especially if it blinks continuously while the pump is engaged, is a lot cheaper than a new pump.
