New cylinder head time! At least won't have to do updated exhaust valve stem seals.

This one got an engine as well. Coolant in the oil spun #4 main.

Cylinder #2, turbo and the exhaust was full of coolant. Injector holdown bolt was broken off flush with the head.

For you young bucks this is what happens when you skip greasing a u-joint during a PM.
Make the driver wish he brought a clean pair of draws with him on this day. 20200529_075943_resized.jpg 20200604_090041.jpg

Yup. Somewhere in the woods at the bottom of highway 63 in Alberta there's part of an interaxle shaft out of a Western Star vac truck. It exited the truck and was never found. Bye bye yokes, air bags and other parts.

Driver felt that for awhile. If it was ignored or ignorance is the question.

While this doesn’t show broken pieces, (it’s inside the power divider unit) the driver was going up hill with a loaded dump truck. o_O

Shifted a gear and boom. Something broke.

What’s  my boss is that this is the second time the unit has been out since it was rebuilt last fall after breaking.

We do not know yet whether this is driver error (only 2 weeks of driving since getting his license) or the abuse the previous driver did to this truck last year.

Previous driver only worked spring, summer and fall with our company before getting fired for wrecking dump truck parts.

90% of trans and diff failures I see are either shock load or running out of lubricant due to lack of Preventative maintenance.

I can't find it on Youtube but I've got an old (like 1980s VHS old) video from one of my instructors on a flash drive. It was either an Eaton or Merritor video called Beyond The Limits. Quite interesting seeing the engineers abusing the driveline on the skid pad and the resulting failures. Stuff like locking in the lockers with a 20 MPH wheel spin and all that jazz.

Goodysnap: at least this time the diff had clean 8 months old oil.

So we’ll put this as driver abuse.

Unless the 425 3406B is too powerful to be a dump truck engine.

    Uses a 15 speed tranny.

    650cat425 Thanks this.

AmodelCat: even if it’s an old video, I’ll still watch it ;)
