Up in Michigan the bugs were horrid. Especially the swarms of locust. .

Sometimes it was all you could do to make it to somewhere where you could safely pullover and get the windshield cleared

In my Many years of commercial window washing all we used was hot water and a generous amount joy hand dish soap. .

I always travelled with 5 gallons of hot water filled up from the dairies. And I filled my washer fluid with hot water and about 4 ounces of Joy or any other lemon based hand dish washing soap.

Additionally I had a pump 1 gallon sprayer filled with the hot water And about 8 ounces of soap, also had an aggressive brush that screwed onto the end of my extendable aluminum painters pole .

Drown the windshield in hot water and soap from the washer while going down the road until it ran out. .

Than Pull off when you can and drown the windshield from the pump up sprayer , refill the washer fluid, whip out your brush and scrub the windshield real good and jump back in the truck and haul but.

Hit the wipers and washers again to clear the windshield. I only squege
My windshield when I was in the dairy or fueling , and used my own squege that had a washer on one side and squege other side

I can't stand a dirty windshield, especially when the sun is low and glaring through it.

My post is not about an every day cleaning..Its more or less after a weeks build up..
Dont usually use trk stop squeegies, got my own on an extendable alum rod..My own squirt bottle with a lil mix in it..

My post was about a good ole fashion cleaning when washing the truck sorta deal..The cleaner and smoother you make it,easier job for the rain and or wipers to take care for..

You people don't use the squeegees that almost all truck stops have at the fuel islands? They work pretty darn good and are free.

I detailed new and used cars at a car dealer for a number of years and I agree with all the steps that you stated. the only thing I would add is spray the windshield with glass cleaner while using the steel wool. It helps break down the bug matter and helps to keep from scratching the glass while scrubbing it clean.

I usually wash my winshield and do it for the bug aspect..The bugs are washed off or come off with a sticker scraper..When windshield is dry i just basically buff it with steel wool to get rid of the microscopic dings from rocks n chunks of salt n such..I dont put any real pressure on the sw when polishing the windshield..

I usually just hit the wiper squirters . Cut it with dawn soap and it cuts the bugs
