    So to make it "legal" . I just need a dot approved gas can bolted somewhere els with fuel pump on the fuel line.?

    Yes. A vacuum hose from the engine will operate a pump to pull fuel to it.

    The generator can’t be fed by gravity (which the generator tank does) or by siphon.

    Unless it has a shutoff valve, and when the inspection is done it is in the off position. We pull many types of specialized portable stages and trailers with hydraulic pumps that have a gasoline pony engine. But that valve better be in the closed position.

    I had an 8000 BTU portable, one hose model. Worked good nighttime only. Heat of the day, it was useless. I must have got the worse portable made.

    Nothing can beat diesel powered AC. For couple grads more you can find decent used APU and enjoy your time without worrying where is the nearest gas station to fill up generator.

    Gasoline fumes are so flammable. Doesn’t take much. A nice small Diesel generator would be nice. Too expensive.

    I'd suggest a mini-split. For about 3-400 more than that portable. It'll take up less room and look nicer.
