Phasing driveshaft

I have found federal recall info released around 3/2011 to include replacing u-joints and phasing interaxle drivelines on Dana equipped axles. The recall applies to chassis build between 1/2006 and 4/2007.

I would say that all chassis equipped with Dana/Spicer axles and driveline since 2006 have has this change implemented at the factory. Meritor axles were not changed.

The recall points to premature u-joint failures possible causing driveline separation. My first thought is that the drive line/u-joint operating angles were too close when in phase.....not allowing for adequate bearing rotation inside the joint to allow for proper cooling/lubrication of the bearings during operation. Grease breaks down, bearings get hot and dry, then failure?

Makes perfect sense to think its close angles. That shaft looks like its pretty straight compared to the traditional angles for sure. I could see where the 45 degree change could fool the joints into thinking they are at the proper angle.

This phasing business must be a whole new way of looking at how driveshafts are set up.

 

Id switch it back if it was mine.

But I guess if you have a failure at least you will know why.........

 

Isn't there a bulletin, is this what that was about? I have a shuddering on my 13 volvo, it isn't near as bad once I'm doing 70-75 mph but getting to that speed feels like the rear axle is dribbling down the road like a basketball on a basketball court. Can't really feel it bobtail but can with any load on the rear. I assumed everybody would know about this, for 2005 at least. Hadn't even thought to look at mine until finding this thread along with the bulletin.

 

I know this is an old post but I was looking at this as im having problems with my driveline/u joints...the driveline you guys are showing in your pics looks like the small driveline between your rear and your interlock...those are not as important to phase as the driveline coming out of your transmission. Stonegirl: What are your drive line u joint problems? Is it a Mack? Some shafts do not even align joint to joint any more.
Why are they not as important?
