I've been told that king pins on "newer" Pete's, 2001 and up, have a design that eliminates the need to jack up the front axle. Any truth to that?

I am assuming you mean to grease them? The best way to greese king pins is to jack up the front axle until the tire on the side that you want to grease is off of the ground

Yes, I understand that. I was told that the design of the king pin assembly in my truck (2004) does not require you to jack up the front end in order to properly grease the pins.

I've never jacked up a steer axle to grease it on anything. Never had any kingpin issues either after many years too. Far as I'm concerned, if grease comes out around the thrust surfaces, its got lubrication.

@PE_T I believe posted a page out of a workshop manual for something not too long ago. It specifically stated to not jack up the axle.

If jacking it up makes you feel better then do so. Same for me. I have jacked the truck but 99.9% i do not. Have never experienced failure or premature wear by not doing so. All king pins i have noticed to wear out prematurely is not getting greased at all.

Yeah, I did a thread search and it all depends on what you were taught, and there's nothing wrong with that for most things. I'm hoping that @PE_T will chime in with what @AModelCat suggested.

I guess I am just more old school. I jack it up, grease my truck every 2 weeks, use conventional Rotella, and do a PM every 12k

Ive always jacked the front end up. Even though there is no play in the kingpins, once in awhile I've noticed it purge a little more out when you set it back down so I think it helps.

It was from his Freightliner Cascadia service manual I believe. The Newer Detroit axles on that one.
