    Hello Truckers,

I am just getting into the truck driving industry. I was previously employed in industrial manufacturing industry. After 27 ½ years with the same employer my position was eliminated due to (RIF) reduction in force. I just graduated from truck driving school on 9/10/09 and have my Class A CDL. I’m currently doing research looking for a good company that takes school graduates. Does anyone have any suggestions? What questions should I ask when comparing companies? I had been accepted by TMC only to have the deal fall apart at the last minute because I live 25 minutes east of I-95 in northeastern North Carolina. I also have pre-hires from Werner and TransAm. Both have contacted me several times trying to have me schedule orientation. My criminal and driving background are both spotless. I am not interested in becoming a lease operator just want a company driver job that can get me some good home time. Home time is more important than money to me at this point. Thanks in advance for any help and support provided and be safe on the road.

Keep the rubber on the road! :biggrin_255::biggrin_25514:

    Hello CamoKid:)

What school did you graduate from?

I have a list of potential trucking companies that do hire new graduates, in the Carolinas.

They are listed under," Trucking Jobs", titled; "Truck Driving Jobs In....the Carolinas".

    Best to you!!!

Check with your local ESC office and ask a case worker about the OJT program.

This is an On The Job Training program that is designed to help both you and the employer.

This would work well for local work in your area. It might be construction....but it will be local and will allow you to utilize your CDL.

    Ride Safe:)

If I may ask, How much do they charge for their program at Carolina trucking? Their web site doesn't mention cost, but says "once you are pre-hired with a company" your traing can begin. Does this mean that they only offer company sponsored students? Thanks.

You want a good company you find out which one has drivers that retire. I would also suggest that you look for a company that does not make it's revenue from the truck. But you're a new driver and finding a good company is extremely hard. You have to look differently than all the other students looking for work. Your record will help but I do believe that you'll need to do some traveling to terminals and do some talking to management. Don't let a school or recruiter find your job, it's your life and you never know unless you try if you can land a great job. We had a driver that just retired a couple of years ago and he worked for one company his entire life, ours. He started when he was 17 and went out at 55. Of course he was a loader at the start but when they did away with loaders a couple of old timers took him out and got him qualified. BTW he retired with a clean record. So you never know unless you try if it doesn't work then use the recruiters..

    Good call, Gas Hauler.....

By the way, it is Donna and CHARLIE, not Jim. I went there too, and glad I did.

But Lord, don't let Charlie hear you call him Jim! If you know Charlie, you know how he will react hehehehehehe

    Hey Xrays2Highways,

The Carolina Trucking Academy program is $3,800 and if you need hotel accommodations they can set that up as well for an additional charge around $400 I believe. You do not have to be pre-hired to enroll in the program. They can provide you with applications while you are attending.
I have decided to go with TransAm as a company driver and I'm scheduled for orientation on 10/7/09 in Rockwall, Texas. I figure when I get the 1 - 2 years of experience with them then it will be easier to pick and choose my future in trucking.
