Hey I know this is a long way off for me 5-6 years out. After my youngest get off to college Buying/leasing a truck to become O/O with my wife riding shotgun doing the books and taxes helping with route planning, working with brokers for the next load and all the fun stuff that come with being an O/O She won't be able to drive due to vision. Anybody out there currently doing this,

Well, we are close to doing this. I run with hubby usually a couple weeks a month. I do all his IFTA reporting and the books. He does get his loads from a broker, but I do most of the route planning for him. And I still do this from home as well, got him though ST Louis today to a new place. I just talk him through the turns. :yes2557:

Honestly, I love being in the truck with him, seeing places that I've never seen. I'm sure your wife will enjoy it as well.

I joined my husband after he was done with all of his training and solo. We live full time on the truck, 5 weeks on the road, 5 days off at my parents house. We sold our house and save every penny we can so we can retire early, we estimate in 5 years. We are right on target for our monthly savings. With no mortgage, no debt, we are free as birds. Husband completed his 1 year at the company and is no longer under obligation to pay back any tuition. Our expenses are food, cell phone, internet and the monthly rent of a POD where we stored our belongings.

Husband is a company driver, so we don't have nearly the accounting to take care of, I keep track of the income and expenses, but leave the trip planning to him. He uses the route given by the company, enters it in his garmin gps and compares it to his old gps and always looks carefully at the map. For me to do this for him would not make him feel he has a good sense of where he was going. I do however, cook, clean, do laundry and keep him happy.

We have always gotten along like two pea's in a pod and have a very specific goal to works towards. However, not everyone is cut out to live like this. For a woman, it can get frustrating not being able to get away from "a man's world", stinky truck stops and occasionally listening to colourful language from irate husbands over traffic and other drivers. One of the things that I miss most is just to casually shop in storesw. I also miss long hot bubble baths, wearing heels and perfume. But the other side to the inconveniences is that we are not living separately, we have all kinds of really interesting experiences and we get to enjoy being together.

Some suggestions that might help make it a good experience is to keep your eye peeled for the restaurants within walking distance of the truck stop. We eat the majority of our meals in the truck to save money, but every so often we find a nice restaurant and have a really nice meal. We also have noted all the Walmarts that allow truck parking and we restock our groceries about mid-point of our run and for me, well, just to be in a store and be able to look at stuff....lol...makes me smile. I don't care what it is. We also have movie nights, make popcorn and watch movies from our bunk. I also have my own laptop to occupy some time, and I also knit and read.

Husband says it is so nice to have real coffee in the morning, meals cooked, and the company. Whatever his schedule is, I stay up with him when he is driving. It is working for us!
