Is it possible to trade my Saskatchewan 1A license for a US CDL? Do different states have different rules about trading in profesional drivers license's?

Some states have there own little laws but still have to follow the federal guidelines. One state that comes to mind is Illinois. They just started requiring people with CDL's to take the written test on transfering there CDL to IL. As far as transferring from another country, I could not tell you. Check with the state you plan on moving too.

When I immigrated to South Carolina I had to start from scratch and do the written and road tests because my Alberta Class 1 license expired before I got my permanent Green Card. In some states you can transfer your license when you get your temporary Work Visa while waiting for your permanent Green Card but you will have to pass a D.O.T. Medical first and import your truck at the border if an owner operator. In South Carolina I did not have to import my personal vehicle to title and register it but a friend had to drive his P/U Truck all the way back to the border to do so from Houston, TX.
Good idea to check on this before moving down. Cost less than $1000.00 for importing fees on my truck and trailer and FET doesn't apply on this.

I forgot to add, I'm a dual citizen. Yankee/Canuck, so green card and work permit will not be necessary.

Also, if I get a FAST card while I'm still in Canada. Will it be of any use once I'm in the States?

I got my 1A last month and started doing line-haul 3 weeks ago. Lots of loading/unloading, but great experience backing into many different types of spots. I would like to eventually move to the States once the economy picks up.

When I moved to Louisiana I had to do everything over. Written and driving. Had to "rent" a tractor-trailer from a driving school so they could "test" me ($250). Plus I had to start over at the company I work for since none of my 30+ years in Canada were "verifiable".

You will need a U.S. Social Security Card, Proof of residence in the state and a current D.O.T. Medical. Whether you have to test again will depend on the state and whether they have an agreement with your current home province.
