    Hey all,
I am looking at upgrading to a Peterbilt 579 with their version of a smart wheel. Would switching to a custom aftermarket wheel be as simple as unplugging the connections and maybe removing the clock spring? Or would this cause problems with the multiplex?

I think it best to leave the stock steering wheel alone in the newer trucks, changing it is asking for trouble

Ok do you have any reasons why? The steering wheel needs to be replaced either way.

If you can get a steering wheel, with all the components that the stock steering wheel has, and it hooks up the same you may be ok. I just have found that sometimes aftermarket equipment just dosen't have the OEM quality. Some cases on certain equipment you are ok, others you are not

Thanks for the response. I think I need to clear up I wouldn't be hooking up any kind of smart wheel. I would be using just a standard SCI wheel. Basically eliminating the smart wheel functions.

It will throw cab controller codes but no engine codes. Also you will lose all functions on there like cruise.
Steering angle sensor for abs might need to get recalibrated
