Admin, please move this if it is in the wrong area. I was unsure. I have a CB in my pick-em-up and I occasionally flip through channels while I'm sitting and waiting to pick my brother up from school. I was wondering... What the **** is up with all the Spanish speaking individuals on Channel 9? I always thought it was for emergencies ONLY!

It's only been designated as an emergency channel in the U.S., as far as I know. Even with virtually no emergency services in the U.S. listening to it, most stateside CBers avoid it. Which leaves it as pretty much open spectrum for our neighbors to the south.

It's been going on for years; I remember listening to Spanish skip in the 70s on channel 9. It's probably not really any different from people using any other freq that they're not authorized on, and nobody gets to mandate English as the only acceptable language. Well, except for international airline pilots.....

Channel 9 is no longer an emergency Channel / say it is Declassified when they took the regulations away from CB radios for having license and turn it into a recreational tool

    darthanubis and Roadmedic Thank this.

Not true, it still is for emergencies and travelers assistance. Nothing has lifted the regulations from the CB band.

    darthanubis Thanks this.

After further research I stand corrected the site that I was on was not an FCC site.

It seems most of the chatter on 9 that I hear besides Mexico are some local dirt haulers. Anywhere I go it's dirt haulers on it like 90% of the time. :)

Maybe that is a good thing... If someone does have an emergency, at least there is a chance that someone will be on the channel to hear the call for help.

Does anyone know of someone that monitors 9 anymore? Seems unlikely to me.

I haven't been anywhere in the last 30-40 years where there was someone or agency that was monitoring channel 9 for emergencies...That basically died out back in the 80's, and then was over with all together when cell phones became popular... So if your thinking of a CB for the channel 9 emergency benefits, you can forget about it...

Allot of the chatter out of Mexico you hear on channel 9 is from Mexican Taxi companies...
