When it comes to competing a load of gas from the rack to the station as quickly as possible but in a safe manner any tips. There are things outside the drivers control such as traffic and 5 trucks ahead of you at the rack. Goofing off at a station reading the paper talking on phone etc will definitely increase the time it takes to complete a load, any tips.

I wouldn't worry about speed as much as I'd worry about doing things right.
Unless you're trying to unload uphill (I had a driver try that. Once) that gas is only going to run out of the tank as fast as it wants to.
One mix or one spill and all that alleged time saving crap counts for absolutely nothing.

Like I said everything should be done in a safe manner no spills or cross dumps. But goofing off at a station will take longer than just doing what you gotta do instead.
Traffic and wait times at the rack are outside the drivers control.

That's the way it's always been and I doubt if it changes for the better any time soon.
When our local racks and terminals switched from top loading to bottom loading in the early seventies we all figured it would speed things up. It didn't. With the increased loading capacity more trucks would use the faster terminals. No net decrease in time at all.
When we started using vapor recovery it slowed us down, too. We finally realized that human effort can only do so much, no matter how efficient the machinery is.
My first boss said "work as fast as you safely can". True in 1970, true now.

Same way with dry bulk tankers. There's only so much material you can force through a 4 inch pipe. You try and force things in an effort to get done faster, you'll end up losing time while you unblock everything.

But, since this question is about hauling gas, I'd suggest finding a routine that works best for you. (I've never hauled gas, don't have the guts to)

I do the same things in the same order at every stop I make. Doing it this way, it all becomes second nature. And after a while, you'll tweak your process a bit here or there and save some time. You'll never be able to beat physics, so you focus on what you can change.

Not the exact legally way to unload, but I was pretty quick. I'd always hook up my fuel hose first on the biggest compartment, then hook up my vapor recovery.
Lots of places might fire you for that but I worked nights so I didn't care. Work my way down to smallest compartment usually (1-1300). Once I pull the lever I'd wait about a min then start loading up vapor hose by that time It was done and I'd drain, load, and be gone. Dropping 8800 gal of unlead out of 3 hole trailer I'd be done in n out in 15 min paperwork and all.
I even took my metal bucket and insert handle on lip of hognose and drain the trailer dry while loading up hoses and used my cone as a funnel to drain the bucket. Dont really get much out of a V bottom trailer though. I did the same thing every single time even how I removed my caps on end of hoses.
I loved hauling gas, loved it so much as a kid I rode with my grandfather every single weekend, summers, and when a field trip came up my folks let me skip to go with him. He got cancer when I was 13-14 and couldn't drive anymore. Company paid me to ride with driver and show him how to load. The Rack didn't have any problem with this at all! Now that would hardly if ever happen!!

"slow is smooth, smooth is fast" There is no such thing as quickly as possible in anything hazmat tanker. If you"re concerned with speed in this industry, get out. F*@#-ups are both expensive and dangerous. Its why its generally gone to %$#@. Low-balling common carriers, minimally trained drivers, penny counting customers. Play that vapor game and an off-duty fire chief stops by the gas station to play his lotto and asks you why its not hooked up. Familiarize yourself with the acronym TYA "Thats Yo @zz". Trying to rush and you spill into a storm drain..TYA. Speedy roadrunner supertrucker cross drop gas into diesel tank..TYA. The tip is to be professional, be mindful and be two steps ahead of what you're doing before you press enter on the rack screen and before you pull any compartment.

LOL...I don't know what the fine would be for not having your VC hose hooked up before you started unloading and I hope I never find out.
Insurance rates for hazmat are already high enough and I don't need any more expenses because of some idiot's need to hurry.

Loading/Unloading is a dance. Do things the same way every time. Walk your hoses and you will get fast with no f ups.

    Funny story about the dance.
Shell in San Jose CA was 15 minutes from swiping card at gate to pulling out of gate. It was a lovely Waltz. Till one day they added a 3' vertical pipe to put the loading arm behind. Think about that. A three foot pipe. That first week many of us wished a jockstrap was part of the PPE

Emptying the biggest compartments first is a way to be done quicker, also are you supposed to hook up vapor recovery before hoses?.
