Fuel trims indicate how the engine is running according to known baselines. 0% is a perfect running engine with regards to air fuel ratio. -# means in order to see good balanced O2 sensor reading the ecm and to "remove" fuel from baseline, + fuel trims mean ecmis adding fuel from baseline.
If a underperforming coil or injector were the issue without causing a misfire, the fuel trims would end up greater then 8% off baseline, setting lean or rich codes.
Those fords are bad for breaking exhaust manifold studs. The manifold will also allow air to minutely be drawn into the exhaust manifold causing a false lean condition. Every single maker (gm/ford/chryco) has issues with the manifold studs breaking, they all use rinky dinky 8 mm bolts or studs

@Flint1 I'm going to take it for a burn down the range road with the scanner on and note my LTFT and STFT and post them up in a while. From what I've read a negative FT means the ECM is cutting back the injector PWM signal because its too rich. Almost sounds to me like a plug or coil might be going out. Truck's got 139,000 km on it. The Ford dealer did all the plugs at 100k but all the coils are original. Injectors 3 and 5 were replaced at 105k and the intake manifold was done at about 118k.
I did wash the engine off at the carwash this morning. I wash under the hood often and its never caused an issue ever in the past.singlescrewshaker, cke, jamespmack and 4 others Thank this. -
Washing it earlier could very well have warped a manifold causing the light ticking sound youre hearing and its building enough heat to expand the metal to close the gap.
Before the ecoboost bit the dirt I did end up with a warped manifold, above 1500 it would get a chirp noise to it and at idle itd be almost non existentsinglescrewshaker, cke, jamespmack and 5 others Thank this. -
If I had to describe it, it actually sounds a bit like detonation. But it pulls strong and sounds normal when you get your foot into it. I would think if it came out of time it'd be acting up all the time.singlescrewshaker, cke, jamespmack and 4 others Thank this.

Correct, -# removing fuel, + is adding fuel from baseline
Have a good lookie at the exhaust studs.. might need a mirror. Oh, and they suck to do. Lolsinglescrewshaker, cke, jamespmack and 5 others Thank this. -
I can see about half of them thru the fenderwell. I didn't notice any soot trails but I will definitely check again for studs and soot. Just heading out on a drive now. Should have some FT numbers for ya'll in 30-45 minutes.singlescrewshaker, cke, jamespmack and 3 others Thank this.

Right if it was out of time even in the range of the phasers it would throw a code at some point so I dont really think it could be that i was just throwing out that as a possibility.
I cant remember if the cam sprockets are a press fit or if they are keyed to the cam. Highly unlikely but if its press fit and it got a half degree off between gear and camshaft then it could cause an issue without throwing a code because the positioning i believe reads off the sprocket not the cam its self so the ecm commands a certain timing and the sprocket reflects that change so it thinks all is well but like you say it would be acting up constantly if that was the case.650cat425, singlescrewshaker, cke and 5 others Thank this. -
Out for a rip right now. Was doing it a bit at first. Drove it 5 minutes down the road to get it hot. Started doing it a little bit. Had half a tank of fuel so threw 62L of fresh 87 octane in it. Seems to have quieted down a lot. Barely noticeable if doing it at all. I remember I accidently threw half a tank of 91 in it last week. Wonder if these things are smart enough to adapt to fuel brand/grades? Or maybe just some bad fuel?
LTFT was about -2 to -3 on bank 1 on the highway and about 0.5 to 1.6 on bank 2.Last edited: Jul 5, 2020

They usually don't leave much of a soot trail. That ain't no kitty lol. Best viewed with the inner splash shield removed..650cat425, singlescrewshaker, cke and 4 others Thank this.

The upstream o2 sensors are what read if youre running e85 so they can definitely tell the difference in fuel grades.
The variance in trims per side could indicate a failing coil or sticking injector.
Id put money on the issue being in bank 1650cat425, singlescrewshaker, cke and 6 others Thank this.
