Side dump trailers

Totally serious. I've lived east coast my whole life and never seen one IRL
Why doesn't the east coast use side dump trailers. Just curious....

 

I meant to say I never see them irl in my area, seen plenty out midwest and west but it's odd they are regional....

 

Probably because of not being set up to push the load into a pile at all times. Guess not useable in most applications. Definitely not for construction, or paving. Mayby they require more maintenance? Am sure they use more space to empty off the load. When i hauled coal, lime, road salt, sand and stone it had to be dumped in a pile. Coal went into a huge hopper .

 

I see them alot at gravel pits and rock quarrys

 

East or west?

 

Space and jobsite is pretty much why any piece of equipment is utilized. We use double side dumps and super side dumps. Both having total of 9,10,11 axle spreads here in Nevada/Utah. But our jobsites are also bigger and we have more room to swing them around the towns. Side dumps are a lazy mans trailer. I can teach anyone to dump them. Problem with them is you need a loader or a blade around to push them into a stockpile. It’s not as precise as an end dump or super dump. We started phasing out end dumps here in Vegas only because the super dumps hold the same if not more per load and can get into tighter spaces than a truck and trailer combo.
Side dumps are good for highway work where you need base laid out. Drive, dump, dig repeat.

I've heard of guys running them paving alongside belly dumps on a co-cal paving train. Never got the opportunity to try it but when ever I do I'll jump on it!

My biggest limitation to using mine is being able to get them in and out of a job site (mostly houses) verses a dump truck.

Get a guy who knows how to run one good and you can stockpile pretty tight before needing a piece of equipment to push up, or push out the pile.
