Hi, I'm a new driver whose been driving CDL A semi with an ELD, but my company occasionally wants me to drive a commercial vehicle without an ELD. I've always declined in the past.

But now they want me to take the company half-ton pickup truck for a two-day delivery job. It doesn't have an ELD. So, how do I account for the driving and non-driving time? Can I enter it into my ELD somehow, or do I have to put it on a paper log book?

If it makes a difference, my ELD is JJ Keller and it links with my tractor before it will record drive time.

And they want me to go NOW, like leave YESTERDAY!
Any help ASAP would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

You can log in into ELD with different truck or trailer but I don't think ELD will switch and record driving time as it's not connected to the vehicle.
I would use paper log but remember you need to have previous 7 days record on paper to be legal in case of inspection.

Do what your company tells you to do or find another job.
Not meaning to be rude to you. Do what the company asks or you'll probably be fired.
Edit: @Snailexpress recommends a paper log book. Do that if you're concerned. That's perfectly legal as a temporary fix.
If it were me, I wouldn't even stop at the scales, driving a pickup truck. That's just asking for problems if you do.

So, I do LTL which means 8-10 stops per day. That means many stops and starts each day. So I would have to transfer in "exact detail" the previous 7 days of work to paper before I could start? Yikes! I've never even used paper logs before.

if its not a CMV you don't need a log book, but you will have to account for those hours when you go back to your big truck

So driving a non CMV does not need to be recorded as driving hours? That's Great News! So I can just take my ELD with me, log in when I go on duty and log out when I go off duty, and I'm set?

just print them or have ELD available to show it to the officer.

I can easily take the ELD with me. I just got done with a 34 hour reset, so how would I start the first paper log? Will I still need to transfer over the numbers from the last 7 days to the first paper log? And will my ELD have those numbers somewhere. (sorry, I just got called in and I'm not in my tractor and I don't have the ELD or logbook with me.)

Take ELD with you. On paper log start with hours available from ELD and go. Chinatown is right about scale but keep record for yourself and company to get paid at full.

    Why refuse work?

    This isn't a big deal.

Just use paper logs, you should have some anyway as a driver.

Do what you are supposed to do when logging paper.

ONE QUESTION - did your company show you what to do when your ELD fails?
