How to become a broker

You would be acquiring your customers by any means, mostly cold calling. Good luck with the venture! Take care of your carriers!

 

Sometimes, in life, it is not what you know, but WHO you know. Make contacts, call around , use your friends, work the phone.
My best advice is be honest and do your very best to keep your word to everyone you deal with.

 

You need to do your due diligence and research. Just like truck capacity saturation within the marketplace there is also broker saturation.

That being said there are some great tools and boot camps out there to gain knowledge. Just remember that nothing is free and you need to pay to play.

Nah, you don't need to pay to play as a broker. like @PPDCT , if i remember correctly, has said many times: Get on at a brokerage and learn on someone else's dime. When you think you are ready, take a year and dispatch or something until your non-compete is over and then strike out on your own. Anyone offering you a "training course" to become a Freight Broker is a SCAM

 

Just undercut/bid the current brokers. And pass it on the the drivers. That seems to be the new norm.

 

That is indeed what I always say in these threads. There's also a reason for the telephone as my icon- there's no slick way to "find customers", as you well know. Gotta get on the horn.

 

Speaking of getting on the horn... Are there any software other than a spreadsheet, that you guys can recommend to track and manage the telephone prospecting process with (prospective) shippers?

Things like how often, or the last time called, or what's discussed or how far along you are with them?

Lonnnnnnggg time lurker, but now getting ready to jump in as a freight broker agent and hopefully broker down the road, and I'm hoping to take advantage of any technology solutions that can assist me in my efforts...
