Thinking about being a trucker

Where are you located? A Class 1A license in Sask will set you back $10k and 4 weeks of time...........I'd consider that incredibly expensive as well, and the opposite of something you can get into fairly easily.

 

Still, $10k for something you'll only use for a few months sounds kinda crazy to me............but that's just me. Not sure what the costs, etc are for BC, though.

 

$2500 will get you training and a license in BC still.
However I think you can make more money in the short term doing something else, I would look for a job with one of the companies building the Coastal Gaslink pipeline (Macro, Surerus, SA Energy, PAPC, Aecon). All have employment openings, skilled and non-skilled work.

 

I'm kinda doing the same thing as well, but working on my PPL instead. There is money to be made for sure. First year I made $42,000 after taxes as a first year driver. It wasn't ALOT but paying no rent or bills it was enough for me. About a year and a half of total experience so far and making $1600 a week pulling reefer.

 

Don't do it, it will be the biggest mistake of your life. Trucking in Canada and the US is quite possibly the worst choice you could make. Any thing else, and try to get into a craft/trade that is either all or mostly union. You will have a life, a steady paycheck, and a pension at the end. Think about it...

 

I’m pretty sure the fed mandated 100+ hours of truck training due to the Humbolt accident a few years ago.

Meaning getting your license will cost between 10-20k now ( depending where you are )

 

Unions are a joke. I turned wrenches at a huge dealer chain in western Canada. After 5 years I got handed layoff papers due to lack of work coming in. Meanwhile all the lazy guys are still working there simply because they had seniority. I prefer to have my job security rest on my work ethic rather than just because I've been there longer. Paying money for the privillege of a job is nothing but a scam IMO.
