A DEF icicle? I’m sure the people in government are sitting back and laughing at us truck drivers over all the troubles we have to go through just to make a buck.

What do you think caused it? -
We'd see those often on the CAT packers. Vibration from the drum would eventually crack the DEF injector. Then it'd crystalize all down the back right corner of the engine. With any luck it'd leach in to the aftertreatment harness connection and burn it up.
Seen a 4K or 5K crack a DEF injector and spray it into the alternator. Locked it up solid!Rideandrepair, spsauerland, 650cat425 and 3 others Thank this. -
AModelCat: did the def corrode the alternator or what happened to it?
650cat425 Thanks this. -
Rideandrepair, 650cat425, pushbroom and 1 other person Thank this.

Haven't seen a def-sickle since I stopped working on cars. Last one was bmw the top of the def tank under the trunk was completely covered. Was a sight once we pulled it down.
Rideandrepair, Shawn2130 and 650cat425 Thank this. -

Most of the DEF crystalization buildup that I have seen is under light load and short duty cycle application. From memory the worst was a switcher for spotting trailers. Exhaust temps never got hot enough to even regen let alone have adequate Nox conversionRideandrepair, pushbroom, spsauerland and 3 others Thank this.
