Tell the guy with the shifting problem what I said in the other thread.
Use your finger tips to shift. If you use your whole hand wraped around the top of the shifter or side it causes problems.
-using your whole hand on the shifter gives you the option of trying to force it into gear, you do not want to do this.
-second, when you use your whole hand to hold the shifter and you get in a hurry, it can cause you to pull the shifter slightly toward your body. Many times this is not what you want, and can cause you to hit the wrong gear or miss the gear.
This sounds like what happend with that student. He pulled toward him, went to a lower gear and forced it in.
The other thing I guess he could have done is just pressed on the throttle too hard and too fast. This is possable also, but normally will not cause a huge surge. Espically with an empty trailer. A loaded trailer however pulls different. If you are too soft with the throttle you can cause surging, and once it starts it only gets worse till you press that sucker down lol.
Good luck. I hope that now that you are in a truck you can understand why these methods can work. If you have not been shifting with your fingers and not your palm, then try it. It really does help with shifting issues.

Day 1 of week 2 completed for the southern group. 6 of 11 passed the pre-trip on the first go around. The others have to try again tomorrow. Yes I was one of the 6 who passed.
Yesterday went on a field trip (with permission from the school) with the husband of the one gal left in our class. Nice little run to LA to pick up dairy products and run them a few hours east. Quite the learning experience. -
Good going Bootlegger

Day 2 week 2 in the southern school... all but one has now passed their pre-trip, so for now the 11 remaining are still here. Spent the day doing skills practice in the yard and touring the beautiful city of Fontana. Things are looking good and confidence for the few of us who have driven before is rapidly returning.
-
and then there were 9. 1 dropped due to illness, the other failed pre-trip.
-
Sheesh there dropping like Flies

I'm beginning to think we'll graduate with 7 or 8 out of 25ish.

Well so far everyone has passed up to today. BTW. sry it has taken me so long to post. today was pre-trip test. we lost 4 today. 2 because they couldn't shift. 1 quit. and 1 couldn't back. Tomorrow is the backing test. hopefully everything will go ok. I will try to keep you update with how the process is going at WVC. I am feeling a lil under the weather so hopefully I'll pass my test then get sick so I won't miss the last day of testing.
Now i am off to bed
. see you on the flip side.

Good luck Bootlegger and jjoystealth,
Sounds like everything is coming together for the students in Salt Lake City and Fontana. Keep the updates coming.
