1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

A hard inquiry (like when you apply for a mortgage) will shave a few points off your credit rating. Something like you checking your score (soft inquiry) won't affect your score.

All pontifications aside about who might or might not do whatever it is they may or may not do because of their personal circumstances; I think employers are going a little too far when they look into your credit. Especially if it hurts your score as a result. Look at Bernie Madoff and Jan Lewan. These guys had more money than they knew what to do with and they STILL scammed people. I've loaned money to poor friends and well off friends alike. I find that the poor friends are more likely to pay me back. Credit check to be a lease operator I can understand, but not a company driver.

There are banks that still do manual underwriting. It's what everyone did before Fair Issac took over. They actually look at your income, debt load, etc and make a real life assessment rather than just look at a number.

The FICO score is stupid anyway. It doesn't consider your income at all. You can have an 800+ FICO score and have more in monthly payments than you make each month. You probably won't have that FICO score for long, but it is possible.

My FICO was close to 800, and all I had were student loans that were on defferment that I had not paid a single payment on. How stupid was that?

Yes it is illegal but... I had no knowledge of it for some years until I applied for a loan. And, I was working for them, loved the company, loved my job and most of all, loved the check I got every week. I agree with everything that you're saying. But, at the time I wasn't about to say anything because I needed to work. Still do and I know why they do it now. So it's kinda ok and then again it's not if you know what I mean.

So which companies check you credit? Out them!

My exwife moved out and stuck me with a mortgage that is tough to pay by myself.

Things have been tight for several years. I wouldn't steal from any company for any reason.

I worked for a flooring retailer at one time that gave me a key to the store first day I worked there! We never had a problem with the inventory either.
