Ok, first, about me: CDL since 96, worked standard irregular route/common carrier OTR; regional; dedicated (on semi-dedicated regional now); expedite in straight trucks, cargo vans and big trucks. Tired of big trucks and hours of detention, so looking at hotshot. Additionally, I'd like to move out of my house and live in an RV permanently, like at a state park in between road trips.

I'm looking at either RV hauling, or hotshot with a 48' flatbed, CDL length & weight, or a combination of the two, but I'm having trouble figuring out what rig to assemble. I don't want to be longer than a tractor-trailer, but looking for something that will give my own bed/toilet/shower/kitchen, and stay out for an extended time. Every option has trade offs, and my head is swimming over all of them.

Option 1: standard dually with a 48' gooseneck, the first 10-11 feet taken up by a camper shell. Drawback: losing the 11 feet, and the camper would have to be mounted in a way that would make it difficult to remove and use on my days off.

Option 2: 5500 cab & chassis with the camper mounted on the truck, pulling a 48' gooseneck. Could then just drop the trailer and pull away for my days off. Drawback: might be pretty long.

Option 3: a Freightliner M2 106 pulling a 48' gooseneck. Drawback: not sure where the camper would go, and that's a medium duty similar to a big truck, which I'm looking to get out of.

Option 4: a toterhome pulling a 48' gooseneck. I just became aware of their existence yesterday. Drawback: expense, plus that might be too long.

So I'm hoping everyone might have some input on this. I'd appreciate any.

Why not buy a truck with a sleeper and pull a 48' FB?

I rarely have any detention. Thursday, I loaded skidded coils. Arrived at 5:20 am and pulled out at 6:00 am. Arrived at receiver and was unload in 30 minutes. Reloaded shingles at Owen's Corning in Savannah and was in and out within an hour. Delivered at Lowe's DC today and out under an hour. FB is not bad man.

I've thought about RV living too but it just doesn't make sense for me right now. Maybe when I'm older.

A regular big truck with a sleeper? With big trucks come big headaches that I'm trying to leave behind, with big noise and a rough ride, and I wouldn't have my house with me. I'm in a 670 now; I know there are bigger sleepers out there, but they're still minuscule compared to a camper or similar. I'd still be hauling my clothes into the truck stop shower, still pooping in smelly, filthy truck stop men's rooms, still crawling in and out of the tiny box, eating a can of soup out of a lunch pail heater, or at best, a microwave.

In the morning, I'd like to be in my camper, frying some bacon and eggs, taking a shower in my own bathroom, etc. Been doing it the regular way since the 90s. Time for something different.
