It's all in the angle - something I can never get just right or consistent. I gave up doing anything freehand that was smaller than lawnmower blades lol. Same thing with chainsaw blades. Once I got a grinder sharpener and perfectly consistent results, I hardly ever run a file on my chains.

First...chainsaws don't have blades...hence the name. The problem with the grinder type sharpening of a chain, due to the speed the grinder is spinning, it is very easy to create far too much heat on the cutting edge. Heat and steel are not a good combination when trying to maintain a strong sharp edge. Using the round file (correct size for the chain is critical) during a cutting session will take the burrs and nicks out of the edge, creating a better cut. It is a good habit to run a quick file round (two or three swipes) on the chain at each fuel break.
