I didn't say he had to do it forever...I just think it may be the best bet for someone for the first couple years...after which they will know a little something about the trucks they may look at buying...insurance will be less....financing will be less..and they will know how to get from A to B without breaking anything. Double Din lcd back up cameras are great....but is it really that great if you have a heart attack from the stress of not being able to pay for the truck it's mounted in? It all then kinda goes back to : Are you really looking to earn a living as a real trucker...or are you just playing?

Lowest Pete is a little late to the game and I think there's quite a few others that are newer so let me point something else out that makes a difference.

I was already a regular member of this forum with over 1200 post count before even dreaming this scheme up. I was the guy from last October through March researching company jobs and asking everyone and their brother who was hiring. I was applying to all flatbed companies at first then branched out from there. In all cases my education was a problem and work history being mostly grad school, and the couple I got pre-hires from had instituted a hiring freeze by the time I was out of school.

I waited it out for MONTHS before eventually realizing I was going to have to buy myself a job. Other than the cahones to do it, I don't think I did anything much differently than a lot of guys on here begging for work except I had some money as well.

So no, I never intended to shoot straight out as an O/O. It's just an idea that was possible against a lack of any other options. Mostly I never intended any disrespect to people who have been driving for 20 years and dreaming of that day to go O/O, although I realize this rubs some of them the wrong way.

Just pointing out that I wasn't trying to skip all the steps, it just wasn't an option at the time and I wasn't going to sit around living off credit cards and doing nothing. I would rather fail after giving it a shot than to have done that, so NO regrets and I'm sticking by that.

What makes you any better? Because you know it all done it all seen it all? Let me share something with you big bad truck driver. If safety isn't your main concern in this industry, you need to jump ship. And you can take that to the bank.

One more thing I've been carrying around with me for 20+ years is what some old time trucker that worked for North Star said. He said son, "The minute you know it all about the road and trucking, and how it works, is the day you pack up your bags and go home because you will never know it all." Seems like maybe you need to do that.

Pharm I read most of the thread, but I will be honest I skipped about 20 pages. I won't lie. Maybe I missed somethings, and I'm not saying you are a bad dude for trying at all. Just trying to share what I may have done, or some different options. Also I'm sure you could have found some company to take you, but you would have to stoop down as most guys would say. No matter if you agree or disagree, at the end of the day, this is a pretty informative thread regardless for anyone that wants to become a o/o or small business owner.

You are forgetting that yours is just a theory.

Ryder won't allow you to destroy their equipment and just turn it in. (they will charge you for everything you break) Not to mention, they don't make money renting trucks at cost or providing low cost insurance for truckers out of the kindness of their hearts. :smt054

If you could just rent a tractor for the same or less than owning a tractor of your own everyone would be doing it.

WOW Alot has been posted while I was out. Rob and I have become friends through his quest to become a truck driver. Some times I wish I could have given him better advice. I have always been honest and I have told Rob from day one what I really thought even though it was painfull sometimes. Rob needs to regroup. Learn from his experences. I know he will.
Rob is a great self-esteem builder. Everytime I think about Rob I feel better about myself.
