How can u tell the difference between wood. ?
-
Experience in working with wood, dad did woodworking as a hobby, older brother does it for a living and I dabble myself.
Grain pattern, color, weight are the main indicators, I'm occasionally wrong according to my brother, but only on really similar woods or very exotic stuff
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
Experience like he said, but if you can dig your thumbnail into it, it's soft wood...
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
Tap on a piece of hardwood like you’re knocking on a door and, for lack of a better term, it rings.jamespmack and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Hardwood loses it leaves in the winter. Softwood keeps them.
