I know this is opposite of what most truckers want, but I need to quieten my truck down. My hearing has deteriorated over the years such that while I have trouble hearing speech distinctly, loud noises, trucks, (my JD tractor also) are very painful and annoying. I had a 98 volvo 20 years ago that was almost as quiet as a car in the cab. My 04 ws lowmax has a 5" pipe off the turbo which then goes into a 6" y and splits to 2 - 6" mufflers right behind the cab doors. The mufflers are not original, they were cat cons and pretty quiet, but these are just big cans that don't do a lot. Ideally I would run it all the way back and put them behind the sleeper with a new set of mufflers. Pretty big job, more time and money than I want to invest at this point. What about this idea though, what if I buy 1 good muffler, put it on the passenger side in place of the existing no good can, and simply block off the driver side stack underneath? Shouldn't hurt to run a single 6" exhaust? many trucks have just 1-5". Engine is a 550hp C 15. Wouldn't change overall appearance either. Thoughts? TIA.

You could definitely do this. Yes.
Or another option is find some mufflers that actually muffle.

Look up Donaldson silent partner mufflers.
They are the best ones they make and very quiet

New Petes have two stacks but only one exhaust. There shouldn't be any reason why your Star couldn't operate the same way.

Or you could just make a weed burner out of it...?

Every T880 with twin stacks the driver's side is just a dummy.

Myself I'd just plumb in a single pipe through to the passenger side and just disconnect the driver's side at the elbow, out of sight.

I have a 378 with a Cummins 870 in it along with 4.33 rears. I installed new mufflers and had the exact same noise/drone as previous. I ran it for a bit then said to heck with that...if I’m going to have noise I’m going to have the look I want. I ripped everything off and installed 7” Straights with a 24” Undercab Aero Resonator. I increased my stack height slightly while I was at it as well. I can not believe how much quieter it is in the cab. I can actually carry on a conversation with someone while driving. I’m just kicking myself for not actually the before and after noise levels. Outside there is a bit of a rumble (not a sharp glass breaking bark), but as I mentioned, the in cab difference is unbelievable, even while in the bunk with it idling). I realize by looking at the date of your post you may have done something already or are deaf now. I’d most definitely do this again.

4.33's you must be in Canada pulling super b also? Yes but what I actually did was said to heck with it and ran straight back to a single muffler behind the sleeper. No more dealing with rotting out $1800 y pipes or changing the 2 6" flex pieces every 2 years. Plus its quieter. I also put a resonator underneath. I can't run tall stacks because my shop has a 12' ceiling and I'd much rather be able to park in there. Curious what rpms you cruise at. The 98 volvo I mentioned earlier had 4.30's and I had to run at 1900 to do 105(65 mph).
