Well, one other and I passed the road test on the first run this morning. The third failed due to shifting, so the remaining 7 had to spend the afternoon practicing their shifting. I'm happy this part is over. Now just waiting for orientation next week.

Tell them the trick I posted.
Use your fingers, not your palm on the shifter.
On top UP gears you tend to always push away from yourself, so you skip a gear by accident. On the bottom gears of the pattern you tend to pull the shifter towards you, and end up down a gear.
Also it helps you to feel the gear and the timing better.
Yes, they will still miss some if they don't have the RPMs right, but they at least will be trying for the right gear, which is one less thing they have to worry about, and they cannot force it in.
Nobody ever commented when I posted about that. Don't know if any tried. I have been teaching that method with all drivers I have tought on and off for 18 years now, and it really does help. Maybe I should change my years as a trucker to the total time I have had my cdl lol. Then they may listen more.
Or not.
Maybe I am just misguided. It always seemed to help though.

Thank you! I've been trying to help the others along the way. I did give the ones who obviously had difficulties little tips like yours to help them get the sequence right. One problem is that the instructors teach to have a firm grip, and it's difficult to get some to understand the difference between a light but firm grip and a death grip. Most have been messing up on matching the RPM's.
