Hello guys, have a question for you all. I’m looking into starting a non CDL hotshot business. I cannot acquire a CDL due to a seizure in my medical history. Seizure was not while operating a vehicle it was while I was sleeping and are controlled now.

I have pulled all sorts of trailers with my 1 ton, & have been a yard Dawg for almost 4 years now.

My question is do I need a med card to start my business? I’ve read several things about even if you are non cdl you need it for interstate driving. But I will only be driving in the state of Texas.

Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

Wow my insurance agent and I were talking about this exact subject and the exact situation, maybe your the guy who called him Thursday and asked about insurance.

He said he can't insure an operation with commercial insurance with a driver with a history of seizures.

Many insurance company are thinkng about having non-cdl drivers get medical exams because of that idiot who ran over people on motorcycles.

Pretty sure that doped up jackwagon that took out the bikers in NH had a CDL A, but MA dropped the football on it big time, combined with the "carrier" that also allowed him to continue to drive.

Insurance companies always shoot for "zero" risk, that's just business, I get that. I'm sure they would love a mandate requiring non-CDL com drivers to pass medical exams, along with caps on "nuclear" verdicts, but hey, why stop there, why not require yearly medical, drug, alcohol, and competency exams for all drivers before insuring them(sarc)?

I get what you are saying but commercial for hire operations are all the same and these underwriters are as you said trying to get to zero risk.
