I have done some Project 44 loads. It seemed harmless. Didn't activate til almost before pickup and then stopped once delivered. I still deleted it afterwards and just put it back on when it was needed again.

"...Carrier may terminate this Section 8 by providing written notice to Broker via email at freight-carrier@uber.com, with the subject line “[Carrier’s name] Device Data Sharing Termination Request.” Carrier’s written notice of termination may also instruct Broker to cease receipt of certain data while continuing receipt of other data, in which case this Section 8 will remain effective with respect to the data access that Carrier has not terminated...."

In reality, I don't do many Hunt or Coyote loads.

I delivered a load yesterday for a broker. Ratecon said emphatically I needed to Trucker Tools app. Broker said I could just send in updates via email. Which I did

You are mistaken Project44 app on your cellphone vs them having access to your ELD, it's different systems

I install it as I take their loads but then uninstall it immediately when empty.
Technically, CoyoteGo also has tracking capability. so that app is redundant.
    Let me guess...Schneider.

I've just installed the Project 44 app and then uninstalled it once I completed the load, but giving access to my ELD is very concerning to me as there is no way to turn that on or off unless I unplug it from the truck I guess but I'm not doing that. It's just a privacy issue to me, as I would think it would be to all, or should be.

Yes. Times are changing. We're ar becoming sheeple society. We may be be defiant and object to this and that for now but it will be sooner than we realize when we won't get loaded before we are hooked up to the Matrix.
You can buy a land in Montana grow some wheat and rye, raise cattle and pigs, live off the land like that with the harmony of the Mother Nature. Hell...you could do that even in Siberian tundra for that matter. Otherwise the Matrix Octopus technological arm will reach out to you, feed you, vaccinate you, tell you where your place on the Planet Earth is and not much you can do about it. Sooner or later...that's where all this is going.
Meanwhile there is a nationwide coin shortage.
    Hmmm....
