I’m an owner operator. I have a 2014 Pete with Cummins isx 550 that’s been deleted with 523,000 miles. I have high oil consumption due to carbon packing and now I suspect my injector cups are leaking bc I’m gettin coolant in fuel/water separator filter. I know a rebuild is not too far in my future. My question is, I may have an opportunity to buy a Cummins X15. It’s 2018 565 hp not deleted with 197,000 miles on it. Would it be better to rebuild my engine or buy the X15 and do a swap out?

Can you have the new one paid off in 300,00 miles? I don't buy used trucks anymore. With the emissions I've not had much luck over 500,000 miles.
I plan on getting rid of the truck I have now between 400,000 and 500,000 miles, or atleast before the factory warranties are up. -

Ok, I missed understood you. Looking at probably $40,000 to rebuild. Say you bought the newer engine for $20,000 who would put it in and what would they charge for labor and how much down time? How much is a crate engine?

Is your 2014 Pete paid off

Swap engines, no. Swap to truck with an x15, yes. You'd be dollars/time ahead just rebuilding and getting back on the road.

You could try the special oil that valvoline created for Cummins. It’s like $100/gal but I was able to get another year out of mine by using it. Call your local Cummins dealer or research it yourself. You run it 1 oil cycle, day 20k miles and it uses a detergent to decarbon the rings. You’ll still have some cylinder scoring but is much less oil usage.
The X15 is a far superior engine. I would never consider going back to the ISX without factory warrant of some sort.Tug Toy Thanks this.
