I don't pull them out for much...lol
-
When I was still in a wrecker, we didnt carry any chain bigger than 1/2. But ton of slings. Had a skid of 5/8" chain and big snatch blocks. If you needed them you loaded to whole skid and hauled them to a job. I can count on one had the times it was used. They made a man out of a boy.
But when you can get synthetic slings good at any weight you want. You tend to use them instead. -
How much them 5/8 chain rated for ? Whats one chain weigh like 75 pounds ?cke, Landincoldfire, jamespmack and 2 others Thank this.

5/8 G120 is good for around 27k wll.
Good for over head lifts. Not good for binding.
Not worth the weight.
Synthetic slings are the answer for lifting or winching.beastr123, cke, 650cat425 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I had to look up the weight. 4.8lbs per foot. I think it is lighter than 5x8 g80.
Now I have to go look.
Edit. It is not lighter. I dont know what I was thinking. -
The chains are shorties (6ish foot) and I had to check the binders and surprisingly they're not more than the 1/2 inch and maybe even less then some.cke, Bean Jr., D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this.

Hello everyone,
I’m a hotshot newbie and in the process of purchasing my trailer gear. Could anyone lend some insight to what length and how many chains and binders would be good to start with? I’ll be hauling general freight, occasionally auto or heavy equipment. Trailer is BigTex flatbed 25GN 35+5. Thanks in advance for any and all help! -
If it was me setting up to hotshot I would consider:
6 12ft 5/16 chains with 2 grab hooks
4 20ft 5/16 chains with 2 grab hooks
6 5ft 5/16 chains with 1 grab and 1 slip hook
10 5/16-3/8 ratchet binders
6 snap binders
6 2" ratchet straps
a 4" strap for each winch mounted on the trailer
The 3/8 chains are overkill for hotshot type work, and the 5/16 used every 4ft on general freight loads will be more than adequate.staceydude, unklphil, kylefitzy and 2 others Thank this. -
Now that’s the info I was seeking!! Very much appreciated sir! Going to order the goods tonight.
