Most gunfights take place within 7 yards. But that's between a cop and an armed adversary. I doubt anyone would be mugged from 21 feet, but even if you were that little Ruger would fit the bill nicely.

If you want to hit me with a tazer I'm in trouble unless you miss. OTOH, one guy in Atlanta tried to tap a guy with a handheld, got it taken away and used on himself. You get close, you take your chances. Years ago I knew a biker who got shot in the head with a .25 - it bounced off his head and he took the pistol away and pistol-whipped the guy half to death with it.
Friends don't let friends own .25's.

That's like the big dude in a navy peacoat who robbed a store....owner shot him in the back with an FN Baby Browning (.25 ACP). Actually emptied the magazine into him. Guy stopped, turned around and beat the stuffing out of the owner. He was found in the hospital later with bullet holes in his jacket but they didn't even break the skin.

As a long time shooter, I can see the issues regarding handguns....what about short but legal shotguns?

I'm trying to sort out the gun thing and yet would do everything I could to be legal.

I have tried to read thru all of this post but it is just way too long, so, I have this to offer to our "conversation".

The following site can build you a map of where your CCW Permit (if u have one) has reciprocity with other states.

    http://www.handgunlaw.us/

Also, there is a book available that the author updates annually, costs $13.95 + s/h, and is called "Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States" and is available here:

    http://www.gunlawguide.com/

    In addition, the NRA site

    http://home.nra.org/#/home

    and the NRA-ILA site

    http://www.nraila.org/

can provide lots of vital information.

Personally, I can tell you this, there is NO LAW stating that a firearm is illegal in a CMV. Not in any states laws, not in a federal law, and not in the FMCSA. Individual trucking company policies may differ.

Just a few specific State's laws I feel should be mentioned here from reading these posts. There are numerous restrictive laws but I think these are the most problematic for LAW ABIDING CITIZENS who rightly choose to arm themselves.

    CALIFORNIA
Restrictive may issue licensing procedures for RESIDENTS ONLY. NO RECIPROCITY for out-of-state permits.
Vehicle carry - handguns must be unloaded and secured in a LOCKED GUN CASE and stowed in the trunk or vehicle storage compartment.

    CONNECTICUT
Individuals not licensed to carry handguns in CT MAY NOT POSESS firearms in their vehicles. You HAVE to have a valid CT permit. Any citizen who possesses a valid carry license issued by another state may apply directly to the state police for a CT permit. The cost is $35.00 + processing fee.

    ILLINOIS
NO CONCEALED CARRY WHATSOEVER. Open carry prohibited in all public areas. Travelers who pass thru IL may posess firearms/ammo without a FOID (Firearm Ownership ID) Card IF the weapons are unloaded and securely cased in the trunk or storage compartment of the vehicle and the ammo is stowed apart from the weapons.

CHICAGO is a world unto itself.
Handgun ownership has been banned since 1982. All other firearms must be registered with the Chicago police when entering the city.

    NEW JERSEY
NO RECIPROCITY with other states but NJ will issue permits to non-residents on a highly discretionary basis.
Firearms MAY NOT be carried in a vehicle without a purchaser ID card or NJ carry permit.

    NEW YORK
    NO RECIPROCITY with other states.
Handgun carry or possession requires a NY license.
Transporting a handgun thru NY may be done with the weapon unloaded and secured in a locked gun case in the vehicles trunk or storage area. ***NOTE: ANY EXTENDED STOPS IN NY WOULD RENDER THE "THRU" NATURE OF THE TRIP VOID AND THUS SUBJECT THE TRAVELER TO PROSECUTION BY STATE AUTHORITIES.

    NEW YORK CITY
The possession of any firearm in the City of New York without a NYC license is strictly prohibited. - Good luck getting one of these.

    RHODE ISLAND
A carry permit issued by ANY state is required for transportation of handguns THRU the state,

    WASHINGTON DC
Firearms not registered with the DC police may NOT be brought into the District. THIS MEANS EVERYTHING.
Travelers to DC are prohibited from carrying ANY firearms into the District. Ammo is also banned. DC law technically forbids transportation of firearms thru the District, HOWEVER, police have stated they will not harass a non-resident passing thru IF the firearm(s) are unloaded, in a locked gun case, and stowed in the trunk. They must also be separated from all ammo. The traveller MUST NOT STOP ANYWHERE in the District or the "passing thru" status will cease to exist and confiscation/prosecution may occur.

    WISCONSIN
See Illinois - pretty much the same

CANADA - NO NO NO NO NO !!!!!
Travelers without an ATT (Authorization to Transport) - good luck getting one of these - who attempt to enter Canada with handgun(s) will have their weapons confiscated, their vehicles impounded, and will face prosecution. Securely casing the handgun and stowing it in the trunk WILL NOT PREVENT SEIZURE AND PROSECUTION.

Anyone carrying in their truck I highly urge you to get your states carry permit, the CT carry permit, the above mentioned book, and stay updated on gun laws. Just because we won in the DC versus Heller case in the Supreme court does not mean the fight is over.

Join the NRA if you are not already a member and STAY INFORMED !!

    Hope this helps...

Yeah, so much for the "right to bear arms".
Gee, I thought the law in New York City was you had to KILL someone if you shot them. At least, that's what a Hunt's Point cop told me years ago. He didn't want the paperwork.

Well; that state is so screwed up I am surprised the cops can carry on duty... I venture a sling shot patrol and a bow and arrow brigade for SWAT any day now.....:biggrin_2556:
