Hey guys. I've tried to find this in the threads put keep getting into the same discussions about interstate/intrastate permits etc. This is different.
Scenario:
Owner Operator, own authority
Truck is registered 26,000 GVW
Truck VIN sticker GVWR is 11,500.
Trailer VIN sticker GVWR 23k+
Driver is CDL-A
No IFTA
No IRP
Do you know what specific states will require a permit?
From what I have found, at these specs, under 26,001 GCVW on the scale or registration, no IFTA, no IRP (those are based on scaled weight and registered weight), but some states like Nevada require some special permit over 10k no matter what, and I think New York, and New Mexico have some requirements.
I'm talking about any permit at all, whether it's a trip permit, fuel, or something else.
I want to make sure I'm good to go through any state to run interstate loads, as well as picking and dropping intrastate loads within states I may pass through.
Any help and direction is welcome!
Thanks
No IRP/IFTA, under 26,001 State specific permits

New York 18,000lb
Oregon 26,001lb
New Mexico 26,001lb
Kentucky 60,000lb
So for you, New York HUT is all you'd need, unless you have no plans of traveling to or through the state.
Edit. I was unaware of this 10,001 Nevada permit.. Looks like you'll need that too. I didn't have one when I went, but they are listed on my cab card so maybe that means I am registered in the state.? Maybe I just got lucky..?Last edited: Aug 11, 2020
clausland Thanks this. -
Also I feel like someone said a special permit is needed to do Illinois intrastate loads.? I'm having trouble finding a source for that online. I'm pretty sure I heard that once, but take it with a grain of salt right now as I can't find it for certain..

Additional Weight Distance Taxes for Truckers in NM, KY, NY, & OR
Oregon may still require you to get the bond to operate there.? -
Oregon is super confusing. The others are all 26001+ so I'm good there, but new York is 18k+ and Nevada is 10k+.
Anyone have experience with Oregon as a non-cdl rig? -
I don't know about the other permits as I don't drive to the east coast and am under the 60k lbs KY limit.singlescrewshaker and clausland Thank this. -

I didn't know I had to file quarterly and missed 2 quarters. First quarter I didn't drive in ny and got a late filing fee but its a few dollars, nothing serious even though I had 0 miles in ny.singlescrewshaker, clausland and Xray4 Thank this.
