I will be receiving my cdl at the end of November and would like to know the ins and outs of the industry. I am in the Philadelphia area. What companies are good ones? What salary can I expect as entry level driver, what are the benefits like? I have been a sales professional for Airgas for 17 years and was laid off in August. I have decided to change careers. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Uggg, you're gonna get answers from one end of the spectrum to the other on your question. Try to decide what area of trucking you would like to do, flatbed, reefer, team, solo, local, regional etc. and then you might get better answers to your question. Once you decide on that, then you can compare companies to benefits. Pay is always gonna be less than what most people tell you, but it will increase when you get familiar with the new job and you get in a routine.

I think I would have done most of that research BEFORE I spent the $$ and entered CDL school. Sorry about getting laid off from your previous gig, that's always a shocker if you don't see it coming. As far as the ins and outs, you'll gain most of that knowledge once you're out on the road. Can't help you with the Philly aspect....
Good luck and stay safe! -
Whatever you think trucking is, it isn't. Like the bumper sticker says, "get in, hold on, close your eyes, and shut up". You are about to embark on an adventure. Not adventuresome? Then stay away from trucking.....
jtrnr1951 Thanks this.
