Ive seen those older 12 valves go some serious miles. Had a customer with a rollback that delivered campers across the country. Last I saw it had almost 900K on it. 3 transmissions, rear end rebuild twice. Guy claimed it had never had the head off. I believed him.

But this was stock and maintained, not overfueled and abused.

Lamemule: I’m guessing that looks like a Cat engine.

    I would believe him too.

I’m hoping my 12v is not over-fuelled and abused. It does smoke if I lay on it. But normal driving it’s like factory but more powerful.

I prevented the head gasket from blowing so far by re-torquing the head bolts. They were loose from over the years.

    7fb 3406b great eye!
Bad liner seal, blown headgasket and coolant in oil started working at the bearings. Had a cracked cac and afr diaphragm, got hot and cracked 5 of 6 pistons.

I highly recommend a set of arp studs. Relatively cheap insurance for the headgasket on the Cummins if you are bumping timing or fuel.

    650cat425 and Shawn2130 Thank this.

LameMule: ARP studs are highly recommended by many people and are very successful at keeping the head or heads clamped down. ;)

My head bolts are tightened down by using the method that Keating Machine uses that allows him to push 1,500 hp with regular head bolts.

So at this time, my engine is a test tool for that method. It’s been like that for many years with a lot of 50 psi boost. Sled pulls, drag racing etc.

I’ve got another turbo on the shelf to kick up the boost some more and who knows, maybe my Cummins will join all the other engines on the Click Click Boom! When something breaks. (I hope not.)

50psi is getting up there. What turbo do you have? Factory intercooler? I had good results from going from stock to a BD cooler on a 5.9 common rail. Noticable power gains from the air density improvement.
Can't wait to see a picture of a rod through the block! Jk

I’ll take a picture of a 5.9 sitting in my garage with a rod through the block. :(

Factory power, no pump tampering. 1992 12v. Came out of my boss’s truck.

Dropped the rod right in front of me while we were diagnosing issues with injectors.

He let me have the engine for building stuff for turbos etc.

My 1997 is still all factory, manifold, intercooler, head bolts, 2,100 rpms governor.

Only thing changed is the compressor wheel, 50 hp injectors, and 0 plate in the pump.

I went the simple route, or I’ll have moths coming out of my wallet.
