Hello pro drivers.
2 weeks ago I got a Volvo 780 and I noticed They raised the 5th wheel with metal bars. I Connected my trailer and measured exactly 13’6, I asked another driver that was parked Next to me to measure his trailer (Same Moving trailer specs) and he’s right at 13’4.
Now my question is if I could clear 13’6 Bridges or I should remove the raisers. It’s Welded in few points so a little headache to do It.
Thanks.
Need some insight with height.

Remove them. They where added for running a tanker trailer. No point in rising your trailer to where it will most likely hit things, especially since you’re towing a moving van so you’re more likely to find low branches and telephone lines in residential areas.
magoo68, wis bang, 86scotty and 1 other person Thank this. -
You're fine at 13 6
One of our vans with 11R24.5 on the tractor measures 13,7-13,7.5 and i run a lot of jersey/Rochester/Albany w/o issues. Just use your head and you'll be fine.
If you own the truck take em offDavidsti1 Thanks this. -
If you take them out you will lose some clearance between your rear fenders and bottom of trailer. That rear panel looks like it will become an easy target for a kingpin too

Remove the fenders and bars.
Standard height is 13.2 anyways. I wouldn't want to mess with 13.6 on the east coast.
Put yourself up along side the megas and compare trailer heights. -

Tree limbs will be your biggest problem. I’m 13’7.5 and set off the warning signs around Memphis. I have experimented and found that it takes 5 seconds to drop 2”. So far I haven’t hit the 13’8 bridges on the south side.
Also scales have height sensors,so you have to watch for those.Last edited: Aug 22, 2020
